Why Escape Rooms Are The Right Kind of Thrilling Fun For You
You’re locked in a room with no way out. You have nothing but the comfort and support of a few friends or family members. You take a look around and you see an unfamiliar scene. There is some destroyed furniture laying around. Upon closer inspection, you notice someone on the floor that you don’t recognize, and they're slowly getting up. This little game just went from interesting and mysterious to downright horrifying. You’re trapped in a room with a zombie!
This is a real scenario that you could find yourself in if you were to enlist for a local «escape room». Escape rooms are typically a maze or a series of rooms connected to each other that require you to solve a number of puzzles or find hidden keys using hints and clues provided to you in some subtle way. If you’ve ever done one before, you know how much of a thrill it can be; if you haven't done one, you’re in for a real surprise.
The idea of an escape room was originally based on «escape the room» video games and have been turned into something you can do with your friends and family, and it’s a lot more exciting in real life.
In an escape room, you can expect to start in a small enclosed room with one or more doors leading to other sections of the maze. In the starting room, there may be no obvious clues. You may have to look through drawers or behind mirrors to find a key or a hidden note. You have to do your best to decipher the clues, notes, pictures, or whatever else you are provided with to understand the hidden plot, and ultimately, how to get out of the room.
Before the game starts, the gamemaster will recite to you the various rules (such as no breaking things), the timer will be started, and the door will be shut – and locked. Once the door is slammed shut behind you, you usually have an hour to figure out how to escape. You can take a look around and find things like a broken clock, a combination suitcase, parts to a simple machine. Are the number the clock is stopped on important? Where can you find the numbers for the combination of the suitcase? Can you find all the pieces to the puzzle? You and your friends will be scrambling to find all the clues and yelling to each other everything you find so you can all think about what to do next. The room essentially turns into a big brainstorming machine full of anxious little bodies.
The whole time you are working to understand your situation, the timer is slowly running down. If the timer runs out, you lose; if you solve the many puzzles and actually escape, then you win. Sometimes there is a small prize for winning, and sometimes you get nothing more than pride. Either way, escape rooms are an exciting challenge.
Why Escape Rooms Are Right For You
The idea of being trapped in a room with a zombie probably appeals to the majority of escape room enthusiasts, but would it be right for everyone? Maybe not, but that’s not the only escape room theme out there. You can find escape rooms based off of historical moments or eras in history. They can also be based on fictional locations, space stations, prison cells, and dungeons.
These types of activities encourage your family or group of friends to work together as a team. Doing this they strengthen their bond of closeness. Beyond that, each individual experiences a challenge to their mind that will leave them a more experienced human being when they make it out of the escape room alive.
This kind of activity brings people out of the monotony of their daily lives. Too many people are trapped in full-time jobs that bring them no joy only to try and squeeze what little entertainment they can from social media. Even when they go out with their friends it’s oftentimes the same old restaurant or bar with no change in pace or excitement.
Going to an escape room is just the change of pace many people need in their lives – a new activity to do together with the family or with your personal group of friends, but where can you find one?
